    Irish Soda Bread

    Ingredients

    • ·4 cups unsifted flour
    • ·1 cup sugar
    • ·1 tablespoon baking powder
    • ·1 tsp salt
    • ·1 tsp baking soda
    • ·1/3 cup butter (5 tablespoons)
    • ·2 cups dark raisins
    • ·1 tablespoon caraway seeds
    • ·1 1/2 cups buttermilk (6 oz beaten)

    Preparation

    1. Step 1

      Blend all dry ingredients in proper order.

    2. Step 2

      Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal.

    3. Step 3

      Add raisins and caraway seeds, then stir in buttermilk to form a dough.

    4. Step 4

      Shape into a loaf or round and transfer to a baking sheet or pan. (Baking temperature/time not provided on original card; commonly bake at 375°F/190°C for 35–50 minutes until done.)

    Notes

    The original card does not include baking temperature or baking time. The buttermilk quantity shows both "1 1/2 cups" and a parenthetical "(6 oz beaten)" which is inconsistent; 1 1/2 cups equals 12 fl oz. You may need to choose a baking temperature (commonly 375°F/190°C) and bake 35–50 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
